One of the most crucial parts of an athlete’s training involves flexibility and mobility training. Flexibility improves joint and muscles’ range of motion and also aids in injury prevention. Mobility activates the engaged musculature that is required throughout the movement of the joint (strength in a range of motion.) You can prevent an injury because of the allowance of the muscle to move further and with more ease with each stretch. Pat Etcheberry uses dynamic and static stretching to help his athletes achieve greater mobility within their sport. Dynamic stretching involves reducing muscle stiffness and getting the joints primed for activity by increasing their lubrication and raising body temperature. This type of stretching is used before training and competition. Pat also advocates static stretching for long-term flexibility, rather than before an event. This stretching is slow and the athlete holds the pose for 30 seconds and an external force is used, such as the floor or and body weight. Pat has designed various stretching and mobility exercises to help athletes successfully reach their goals in flexibility.
